The HSBC challenge work posed a question that can easily attract oversized claims: could a small quantum component improve fraud-case ranking after a strong classical model? This was public-benchmark research—not HSBC production data, deployment, policy, endorsement or a completed hybrid result.
Qonduit's documented contribution was not a performance headline. It was to help narrow the proposed experiment until a later answer could mean something.
The resulting public design focused on a small residual re-ranking component after a frozen classical comparator. In ordinary language, the proposed component would reconsider only a narrow band of close cases after the classical model; it would not replace the fraud model. The public hybrid-design view records that design, while the readiness view states that scientific hybrid execution had not been completed. The source-evidence map supplies content-addressed identities and the scientific claim ceiling; it is an index and hash register, not an archive of the named source records.
Four questions before execution
A bounded experiment has to answer four questions before an execution can support a credible claim:
- Identity: Are the project, workload and data boundary exact and stable?
- Fair comparator: Does the candidate face the same information as a strong classical residual head and a no-head control?
- Resource limit: Can representation, evaluation and reconstruction remain within declared ceilings?
- Authority: Even if the plan is technically possible, who has permitted execution or an external effect?
These are conditions for a study, not a claim that the study completed.
The honest result is still “not run”
The public record provides no qualified hybrid performance result and no basis for saying Qonduit improved fraud detection. There is also no basis for saying the proposed component failed scientifically: the experiment had not produced that result.
That distinction—negative result versus unexecuted design—is essential. A governed programme should be able to admit a bounded pilot, reject an idea scientifically or abstain when the evidence is incomplete. The state recorded by the public evidence map remains a design state, not a performance state.
Why this contribution matters
For enterprise quantum research, the easiest experiment to run is rarely the most informative one. A circuit can execute while the comparison is unfair, the data boundary is unclear or the output cannot affect a real decision.
The HSBC record supports a more defensible contribution: make the question and data boundary explicit; require the same-information classical comparison; set resource ceilings before compute; keep protected evaluation outside development; and preserve an abstention state when evidence is incomplete.
The present story is therefore not “quantum improved fraud ranking.” It is “a proposed hybrid component was narrowed into a falsifiable experiment—and the programme did not claim a result it did not have.”

The linked hybrid and readiness sections are the reader-facing sources for the design status; the source-evidence map controls the permitted ceiling. They were recorded for this candidate as at 2026-09-28. The article does not disclose Qonduit architecture, internal controls or provider mechanics, and it does not imply HSBC deployment or endorsement.
